  1. Jarvig:

    Cilius:

    Super forståeligt regnestykke og eksempel
    Dig selv:
    Simpel og grundlæggende forståelse.

We are all on the same team!

  2. Dear all, congratulations on catching the silly math error, Bravo! We actually caught the error ourselves before the paper was released, but not before it was "put to bed", in other words it was too late in relation to printing. We informed the person who the answer was written to and explained that in the heat of the battle, kilometers where multiplied by the correct kcal usage (posted by Morten, and yes we used the same reference Katch and Katch, of approx 6 kcal/min for a 68 kg person riding at 15 km/hr). 300 x 6 is 1800, and what should have been multiplied was the total minutes of exercise which we had calculated 1200 minutes (and of course we where aware of the correct way to calculate the caloric expenditure otherwise we would not have calculated the minutes of the exercise or referenced to 6 kcal per minute at 15km/hr, we simply booffed, smile, happens to everyone sometimes) with 6 kcal--1200 x 6 = 7,200 kcal. This is approx. a kilogram of body fat if the person was not to increase their dietary intake of calories, which someone else pointed out would be unlikely. Bottom line is that it was a silly math mistake, and unlucky, however, it does not change the essence of the story. Bottom line is that the reader expected, like many individuals do, to loose multiple kilograms via moderate intensity exercise alone. Now this is possible, but it takes a lot of time and energy and requires that one does not simply over-compensate via additional caloric intake. The answer to the question is meant to highlight the fact that it takes A LOT of work to burn off a few kilograms of fat and that if one wants to obtain meaningful and sustainable weight loss, the best method is to combine exercise (which included both endurance type cardiovascular exercise and STRENGTH training), with dietary adjustments and dramatic increases in daily physical activity (dåglig bevæglse). An integrated effort from each of these areas can and should lead to significant weight loss over a period of time, but keeping the weight off will be the tricky part, and require total lifestyle adoption. The answer is by no means meant to indicate that it is not worth while to exercise, that interpretation is not founded at all if one has read both articles and continues to follow the series. It is also worth noting that in newspapers space is limited and formulation is limited and thus there is very limited option for deeper discussion. Also we choose to use the word calorie as people know kcal as calories, and the most important thing is that the general reader understands the terminology. In any case, I hope that this can put the discussion to rest, yes it should have been a kilogram of fat potentially lost with 300 km over 8 days and not 250 grams, but in the end the person asking the question expected much more than a kilogram. I believe the understanding that there is ample calories in a kilogram of fat to run a couple of marathons is thought provoking for many and hopefully will encourage them to use a multi-method approach to brining the kilos off. I commend you all for finding and discussing the error and hope you all remember that we are all on the same team; a team that is committed to inspiring people to learn and to take responsibility for their health and well being. Motion-online is a great initiative, as is the participation all of you who partake in the forums. Keep up the great work on being good health advocates and watchers. In health, Chris MacDonald.
