Audi take 1-2 in first qualifying

Audi took first blood in the opening qualifying session for this year's Le Mans 24 Hours, with both of their cars topping the timesheet on a treacherously wet track.

Allan McNish's laptime of 4:19.863 was enough to put his No. 7 Audi R10 TDI on provisional pole position, with one more session to run today.

However, due to the soaking wet conditions, lap times are still at least 45 seconds off the dry best, recorded in the official test session last weekend. With clear sky above, times should tumble in the second session, taking place later on tonight.

McNish's lap was more than three seconds quicker than the best of the sister Audi, set by Emanuele Pirro.

Audi's main rivals for the race - Pescarolo Sport - were third and fourth quickest. World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb set the third quickest time in the No. 17 car.

The Frenchman is being given the majority of the driving this evening as he starts to re-acclimatise himself with circuit racing again, having been unable to participate in the official test day earlier this month due to his commitments in the Acropolis Rally.

Loeb's teammate Eric Helary spun early in the session on the wet track.

Erik Comas was fourth quickest in the No. 16 car, having set his time early in the session, before handing over to Emmanuel Collard.

The best of the rest went to the Creation of Jamie Cambell-Walter, Beppe Gabbiani and Felipe Ortiz. Campbell-Walter held the top spot briefly, approximately 45 minutes into the session.

Aston Martin Racing so far have the best GT1 time with the 007 works DBR9, however Andrea Piccini blotted his copy book by spinning the car into the gravel 25 minutes from the end.

Aston's chief rivals Corvette spent the majority of the session in the pits, choosing not to risk their C6-Rs in the wet conditions.

The session was stopped eight minutes shy of the full two hours after a crash by the Chamberlin Synergy of Miguel Amaral at the Dunlop Curves, who damaged the No. 39 car against the guard rail.

A number of cars had spins and minor crashes as drivers acclimatised to the wet condition's including Alex Frei and Shinji Nakano in both of the works Courage entires.

Tracy Krohn's White Lightening Porsche, Christian Vann's Ferrari 550 and Juan Barazi's Courage were among others to have minor offs.

Muahahahaaaaa et par onde besætninger Audi har fået stablet på benene til at brænde bilernes wheeelza. :devil::tongue: Det bliver sgu spændende og følge årets kamp om kilometerne også selvom Tom K's hold synes uovervindeligt. :superman: John Nielsen har godtnok fået banket ind i mit lille hovede at 24 timer er lang tid, meeeen de her dræberteams synes at udvande den betragtning mere og mere år for år. :cool:

Qualifiring blev kendetegnet ved, at meget få teams tog chancer. Hver kører skal gennemføre 3 runder i hver session og opnå en tid der er maks 115 % af den hurtigste i klassen. Dette var præcist hvad mange gjorde.

Udsigterne lød på bedre vejr i dag, så ingen grund til at tage vilde chancer i går.

Audi var et af de få teams som var ude i mange omgange. Audi har ellers allerede gjort alt for teste R10 i bund...herunder regnvejrstest. Men i går var den første "ægte regnvejrsdag", hvor regnen bare væltede ned. Derfor kørte de to Audi vogne rigtigt mange omgange, hvor de samlede data ind. Kun få af omgangene prøvede de at sætte en tid......resten af omgangene var blot stille og rolige omgange 10 sek langsommere end de kunne.

Det bliver spændende i dag om vejret bliver bedre.

Så er 2. og sidste kvalifikation i gang 19-21 og 22-24. Det er vamt og tørt idag.

Med mindre mærkelige ting sker, så får vi nogen hurtige tider at se. Eneste detalje er, at efter gårsdagens lidt "spildte dag", så vil mange sikkert primært køre efter at få race setup helt optimalt og ikke gå efter en qualifiring tid som sådan.

Tom i pole (tiden sat af Capello).

De to Audier blev 1 og 2. Tiden var hurtig. Lidt langsommere end forventet. Dette skyldtes dog tog ting. For det første at Audiens drejningsmoment er så stort at den smadre qualifiring-dæks på mindre end én omgang. :w00t: Så Audi måtte sætte dem på race-dæk. For det andet udtalte Capello, at han slet ikke gik efter en så hurtig tid, men at "vognen bare kørte hurtigt og så kom tiden". Wooww.

Pescarolo skuffede. Kun 3 og 4.......hele +2 sek efter. Det skal dog siges, at Pescarolo dummede sig og prøvede at sætte pole-tid da der var meget trafik på banen og de derfor løb ind langsomme biler (hvilket Audi ikke gjorde). Så reelt er de to vogne nok lige hurtige flat out.

Overraskende flot af Courage Competetion, der kom ind på 5. pladsen i en god tid.

Danske Zytek smadrede motoren på første omgang i den første session. Tog 4½ time at få skiftet til den motor der efter planen alligevel skullle havde været sat i bilen inden selve løbet. Bilen kom først ud at køre da der manglede 25 min. Bilen var ikke sat optimalit op til qualifiring og Elgaard fik kun 3 flyvende omgange. På den baggrund flot 8. plads.......og det stadig realitisk ud at køre om bedste placering efter Audi/Pescarolo.

Magnussen skulle som Tom ikke sætte pole-tiden. Det blev Gavin som gjorde dette. Som ventet kunne Corvetterne ikke helt følge med Aston Martin og er 1-2 sek efter. Ingen katastrofe, men stadig ligeså svært at følge med som forventet.

I GT2 klasse var begge danske islæt glade for indsatsen og begge ligger med tider som gør dem fuldt konkurrencedygtige om de bedste placeringer i klassen.

Alt i alt en næsten optimal kvalifikation......og udover et motorskifte i Zyteken og en afkørsel i den danske Lister racing bil, så klarede alle biler med danskere sig problemfrit gennem kvalifikationen.

Bliver et top Le Mans. Og en masse LMP1 biler kørte fine tider, så Audi/Pescarlo trods alt ikke vinder med +50 omgange. :laugh:

Kæft jeg glæder mig til Marathon lørdag herhjemme i hulen med 24 timers lemans og lidt poker på compen i nattetimerne! :w00t:

ja, personligt tror jeg også det har været med til at gøre interessen for le mans så stor her i dk!(big mac og tom k har selvfølgelig hjulpet lidt :tongue: )

de oplyste at der var mindst 30.000, måske op mod 40.000 danskere - det er sgu meget godt klaret!

men det at de har styr på historierne samt at de ofte interviewer de danske kører er superlækkert.

men glæder mig også. jeg har dog været på arbejde om lørdagen og normalt plejer jeg at falde i søvn ved 17.00tiden foran fjerneren, men jeg må lige anstrenge mig så jeg får starten med :laugh:

Ikke fordi jeg er bil-specialist, men jeg har nu altid tvivlet på, om gearkasse/transmission i den der diesel-racer kunne holde. Den må jo have et moment, der svarer til det, man finder i en mindre skibsmotor!

Det er klart.

Imponerende er dog følgende.

Gearkasse + kobling i R10 er betydeligt lettere end i R8. Selvom den skal klare det dobbelte drejningsmoment, har Audi faktisk fået vægten ned i gearkassen + koblingen. Og de har, udover her i warm up, faktisk ingen problemer haft med transmissionen gennem al testningen + races.

Indtil da, vil jeg forsøge at genfortælle en af mine all-time favorit late-night røverhistorier fra Lemans. Denne blev dog fortalt under årets Sebring af medkommentator Nicolas Kiesa:

John Nielsen oplevede i 90'erne under Lemans, at noget i hans instrumentbræt gik løs midt på en omgang. Dengang så man lidt stort på sikkerhed, og man oplevede mange mærkværdige ting i løbet af de 24 timer. John havde en værktøjskasse med i bilen ligesom så mange andre kørere. Det var til at fikse småting der kunne gå galt, så de kunne komme hjem i pitten legalt, men de havde dog ingen reservedele med (det ville også have været for sindsygt :laugh: ).

John bliver over radioen bedt om, at skrue en bolt ud af sin sikkerhedssele, fordi teamet ved at netop den størrelse bolt passer ind i netop den smadrede del i instrumentbrættet. John skruer bolten ud af selen, skruer den i instrumentbrættet og kommer helskinnet hjem i pitten uden sele på. I pitten bliver der skruet en ny bolt i selen, han får benzin og nye dæk og fortsætter sit stint. :laugh:

Der er også mange gode historier om kørere der om natten, har været på benzin-rov ude på campingpladserne, for at komme hjem i pitten.

Audi Motorsport boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich says the team have fixed the problem they had in one of their R10 TDIs in the warm-up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and is confident it won't happen again.

The No. 7 car driven by Allan McNish, which qualified on pole position with Dindo Capello at the wheel, only had two very slow laps around the La Sarthe circuit in this morning's session. Afterwards, the Scot was certain the car would be fixed in time for the race but didn't yet know what the cause of the problem was.

"We had a transmission problem in the differential: we changed the part and the car is ready again," Ullrich explained to autosport.com.

"It didn't break in all the endurance runs we've done until now. I'm confident it shouldn't happen again."

Ja, nu må vi se om de gearkasser og differentialer kan tåle at blive revet i, i 24 timer. Der er meget stor forskel på 12 og 24 timer (Sebring og LeMans), så jeg er sgu lidt bange for, at de måske kan begynde at skabe sig over natten... :cry::cry:

Men det ser da godt ud indtil videre. Go' fart, ingen forceringer. Lad os håbe McNish holder den på vejen, og så lader vi TomK om at trække forspringet ud til det uhyggelige i nattens mulm og mørke! :superman::devil:
